Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center is preparing to take a major step forward in local healthcare. Construction is now underway on a new cardiac catheterization lab (cath lab) that will bring advanced cardiology services directly to the Gila Valley.
For many years, patients experiencing heart attacks or other serious cardiac issues had to be transferred to Tucson or Phoenix for treatment—often by helicopter. These transfers not only delayed care but placed a heavy burden on families. That’s about to change.
What is a Cath Lab?
A cardiac catheterization lab is a specialized hospital unit where doctors use minimally invasive techniques to diagnose and treat heart conditions. Using a thin catheter, cardiologists can see inside the heart’s arteries, locate blockages, and restore blood flow—sometimes within minutes.
As our CEO Dr. Carter explains:
“In cardiology, we say ‘time is muscle.’ The faster we restore blood flow, the more heart muscle we save. Having a cath lab here will be lifesaving for our community.”
What This Means for the Gila Valley
-
Quicker emergency care for heart attack patients without leaving the community.
-
Less stress on families, who can remain close to loved ones during recovery.
-
Expanded cardiology services, including diagnostic procedures for chest pain, angina, and shortness of breath.
Timeline
The cath lab is currently under construction, with completion and service launch expected in the near future. This project represents a long-term investment in the health and well-being of Graham County and surrounding areas.
